The 8 Easy-To-Recreate Street-Style Looks From Tokyo Fashion Week
Once upon a time, all the attention was on the big four fashion weeks: New York, London, Milan and Paris – where bi-annual runway collections would dictate the form and flavour of the seasons ahead. But at the turn of the Millennium, something shifted, and we saw new cities added to the fashion week calendar: from Stockholm and Tokyo in 2005 to Copenhagen in 2006 and Berlin in 2007.
Tokyo might be relatively new to the fashion week scene, but Japan’s contribution to the fashion hall of fame is undeniable, with visionaries such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe and Yohji Yamamoto setting the standard for a new generation of design talent. And while there are plenty of new names to discover right now – see Vogue Runway’s line-up here – this season we have found ourselves drawn to the eclectic ensembles of the attendees outside the shows.
As someone who visited Tokyo back in spring and became obsessed with the outfit choices of its stylish inhabitants (I would even go as far as to say it’s the best-dressed city I’ve ever visited – don’t @ me), I am probably biased, yet I would challenge anyone to look at these street-style pics and not be impressed by the creativity on show.
Perhaps we could all afford to embrace a little Tokyo Fashion Week energy in our wardrobes this autumn. From clashing stripes to off-beat layering, scroll down to see and shop our favourite street-style looks from the shows.
