Like leather boots, puffer jackets are the kinds of fashion pieces that only gain relevance once you feel the first fall chill in the air — and then become absolute essentials in your closet as you reach for them each time you want to stay both warm and comfortable while prioritizing stylishness. With Columbia’s new Amaze Puff collection, your allegiance to the trusty puffer will reach new heights altogether, as the staple becomes something you don’t want to take off after coming home every day.

Introduced at the top of the month to the tune of much social media buzz, the Amaze Puff comes with a warning label: “Danger, risk of extreme coziness.” What sets it apart from the crowd is just how faithful it is to your sartorial sensibilities, while still being boosted with top-of-the-line technology. Fall and winter puffer jackets of yore typically came in a range of predictable colorways, spanning from the pitch-black to the off-white, with the occasional pastel pink, burgundy, or deep green sprinkled here and there. Not so with Columbia’s Amaze Puff, which comes in 14 (yes, you read that right!) different shades: the likes of Citron Haze (a zestier take on the trending-right-now butter yellow); Shale Purple for tapping into the light-purple trend spotted in the fall 2025 collections of labels like Prada and Loewe; as well as the moody and sumptuous Tobacco. PS: There are high-shine and matte options available, which also take the personalization aspect up a notch.

Columbia, established in 1938, specializes in outdoor apparel that includes bestselling, high-performance outerwear, so it’s really no surprise that the Amaze Puff line has so many bells and whistles in the functionality department. Omni-Shield technology protects each coat’s surface from moisture and stains; interior straps (which you can clip on and off) allow you to carry it backpack-style if you ever get overheated; and you’ll be constantly insulated from the cold thanks to that 650-fill-power down (an optimal warmth-to-weight ratio), thumbhole cuffs, fleece-lined pockets, and drawcord on the hem.

You’ll also be getting the perks of a removable hood, zip or snap closure options, and a silky-soft fabric that, should you press on it, compresses instantly — while rising up and taking its original shape just as fast. Another bonus: Those who prefer their puffer jackets to have a cropped silhouette should look no further than the waist-length Columbia Amaze Puff, but the collection also comes with mid-length, long, and even vest options. Same impressive quality, different styling opportunities to fit your needs and preferences this season.

I, for one, had the privilege of directly testing out the Columbia Women’s Amaze Puff Hooded Jacket in Rain Forest. The first thing that struck me was just how vivid and saturated the color looked — capable of elevating my straight-leg jeans– and chunky sweater–powered capsule wardrobe for fall. Speaking of the latter, I didn’t feel like wearing a knit layer underneath made the Columbia coat look bulky or feel stuffy.

I also appreciated how ideally the piece’s elastic cuffs fit over my wrists (and that it’s possible to put your thumbs through the thumbholes, guaranteeing even more protection against the elements). Though I didn’t use this feature quite yet, given it’s still a bit too early in the season to be shielding your hands from bitter temperatures, I know I’ll be grateful for it this fall and winter.

As an experiment of sorts, I poured a cup of water directly onto the surface of the coat and was reminded of ducks (you know, per that famous saying “like water off a duck’s back”) because the drops trickled down without ever permeating the fabric. It was a wondrous sight to behold, and I can only imagine how well the coat will perform in an upcoming rainstorm.

Its down fill, too, felt insulating without making me break out into a sweat, even as I was wearing the coat indoors while trialing it for the purposes of this article. I found a lot to love in the Columbia Women’s Amaze Puff Hooded Jacket‘s fleece pockets (that zip, no less, so that your keys, ski lift ticket, or expensive tube of lipstick can stay safe inside). For the really valuable daily must-haves, there’s also an internal pocket at the chest (also lined with fleece) to take advantage of.

It’s important to mention that the front of my body didn’t feel cold around the jacket’s zipper area during chillier mornings, as its front closure boasts a flap cover that keeps sudden drafts away. And if I wanted the coat to look more streamlined on my body (especially if I was wearing it with skinnier bottoms styles), all I had to do was adjust the drawcord at the hem. Similarly, I found myself taking off the drawcord-equipped hood a lot when A) it wasn’t necessary weather-wise and B) it interfered with my outfit du jour.

You better believe I’ll be absolutely inseparable from my Columbia Amaze Puff in the next few months. Still unconvinced that it’ll mesh well with your cold-weather ensembles? Here, two styling suggestions on how to wear it in two different lengths: leveling up your style while keeping cozy 24/7… or at least, you know, during the hours you get to spend wrapped in the puffer jacket’s caring embrace.
