Sleek, elongated bootcut silhouettes are taking centre stage this autumn, with one special archival style leading the way. “We’re excited to reintroduce Gap’s iconic Long & Lean Jean, an icon of the early aughts, back into our denim assortment this autumn,” Jane Pattinson, global head of design at Gap, tells Bazaar. “The updated silhouette remains true to its archival fit—fitted in the waist and slim through the hip and thigh, with a clean bootcut leg—but we’ve optimised it for comfort with a new contour waistband, a slightly longer inseam, and updated stretch denim.” Whether you dare to go low-rise or prefer something high-waisted, there are plenty of options available.

The baggy-denim trend persists this season, with low-rise styles remaining dominant. “Low-rise denim is ready to return to the spotlight this autumn,” Pattinson says. “We’ve slowly seen lower rises start to dominate everything from street style to the catwalks over the last few seasons. There are so many ways to style low-rise denim in an approachable elevated way for a more current look, like playing with proportions.” Choose from quintessentially low-slung shapes, such as the Ayla from Citizens of Humanity or the Baggy Dad jeans from Levi’s.

“The straight-leg remains a cornerstone of autumn styling,” says Grace Na. Here, stick to true-blue washes that will stand the test of time. You can also lean into the low-rise movement here for a little modernity, as Linda Cui Zhang, associate fashion director at Nordstrom, recommends. “A classic fit that feels refreshed in lower mid-rise styles, it’s perfect for tucking in tops and adding an accent belt,” she explains. Choose from Frame’s latest silhouette – the Mellow – or Cos’s slim-fit in deep indigo blue.

The dark indigo wash

Across the autumn/winter 2025 runways, from Khaite to Louis Vuitton, the notion of dark denim rang clear. “The denim at Khaite’s runway show introduced a new sense of sexy, dressed-up denim, featuring dark washes in roomy, trouser-like silhouettes,” Cui Zhang says. “Lemaire’s show embraced expressive minimalism and clean lines, showcasing dark denim on the runway. The dark indigo wash brings a dressed-up elegance that takes you from office to date night.” Take styling notes from these minimalist-friendly brands and style yours with sheer layers and leather accents for edgier appeal.

The embroidered and embellished

“Decorative treatments like studding, embroidery, and lace insets bring a romantic, bohemian exuberance to denim,” says Cui Zhang, who considered Valentino’s autumn/winter 2025 show a standout moment. The brand’s presentation of “embellished denim with jacquard patterns and whimsical flair” on the runway offered the possibility of a return to maximalist-forward jeans, with little accent details. Here, you can opt for something as subtle as Simone Rocha’s distressed jeans with a delicate sprinkling of crystals or go all-out with Simkhai’s wide legs with pretty bead embellishments.

The updated barrel-leg

“The barrel leg also continues to lead autumn denim trends, with the Wes, our best-selling, classic barrel fit, remaining a wardrobe staple,” says Na. Focus on fresh interpretations of this modern classic by looking for styles that feature gentle curves with subtle volume, rather than the full-on horseshoe shapes. “These sculptural fits bring a fresh, directional feel to denim while still being versatile enough for everyday styling,” explains Sarah Ahmed, CEO and cofounder of DL1961. You’ll find washes that range the gamut from stonewashed blue to deep indigo and black.

“For autumn 2025, we’re seeing a strong return to tailored wide-leg silhouettes with clean, elongating lines that offer both ease and refinement,” says Ahmed. “They strike the perfect balance between comfort and polish, making them an easy choice for everything from office dressing to weekend wear.” It is encouraged to rely on simple shapes that can play double duty in your wardrobe. Style them with crisp button-down shirts, soft T-shirts, or fitted sweaters, then wear with heeled boots, retro trainers, or leather loafers, depending on your preference.

The new cigarette

“After several years of looser silhouettes dominating the market, there’s a renewed appetite for slimmer fits like the cigarette leg,” says Ahmed. “Sleek and streamlined, they’re a polished alternative that pairs seamlessly with autumn staples like knee-high boots, structured outerwear, and oversize knits.” Keep things classic with your washes, relying on timeless indigos, versatile mid-blues, and clean, unfussy finishes that never go out of style. This way, they certainly won’t feel like the skinny jeans of the past.
