Square Enix has recreated the cast of Final Fantasy VI in the beloved HD-2D art style of Octopath Traveler, to celebrate an upcoming crossover with its mobile game, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The company has released videos showing characters like Terra and Locke in HD-2D battles.
Several of Square Enix’s classic older titles have been remade using an HD-2D style, where the original pixel art is redrawn in gorgeous high-definition visuals, with the end result resembling a diorama come to life. Games that have received this treatment include Live a Live and the Dragon Quest 3 remake, but it remains to be seen if any Final Fantasy titles will get official HD-2D remakes.
Final Fantasy VI Characters Have Been Made In HD-2D
The game that kicked off the HD-2D movement was Octopath Traveler, which has since expanded into a full-fledged series. One of these games is Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which is a mobile title. To celebrate an upcoming crossover, Square Enix has released images and videos featuring Final Fantasy VI characters in Octopath Traveler‘s signature art style.
This reimagined version of the classic SNES JRPG was created as part of an upcoming crossover between Final Fantasy VI and Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. During this crossover event, players will be able to battle Magitek soldiers and meet characters such as Terra, Locke, Edgar, and Mog.
Is An HD-2D Final Fantasy VI On The Way?
Seeing the Final Fantasy VI cast being drawn in the HD-2D style is likely to get fans’ mouths watering at the prospect of a remake. While that theoretical game would be gorgeous, there’s already a remaster on the market, in the form of Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster.
That being said, Square Enix isn’t opposed to doing multiple remakes or remasters. Indeed, Dragon Quest VII’s second remake was announced during the September 12 Nintendo Direct, so there’s no reason why a Final Fantasy VI HD-2D game couldn’t be on the cards further down the line. For now, however, fans will have to enjoy the tease of an HD-2D version of FFVI that this collaboration provides.
