Summer is undoubtedly a busy time for wedding celebrations, however, according to Hitched, the most popular date to get married in the UK in 2025 is Saturday 23rd August, closely followed by Saturday 6th September. Autumn has always been a popular time for weddings, and autumn wedding guest dresses lend themselves to a wider range of outfit pairings (hopefully without having to hide your dress under a coat all day) and a lower chance of sunburn before the canapés arrive.
I am now coming towards the end of my own three-year wedding relay, working my way up and down the country, and I have learned first hand that it pays to think about what you want to wear in advance. You don’t want to be running around Selfridges the night before or having last-minute panics about your dry cleaner’s opening hours.
I certainly don’t subscribe to the idea that you should buy something new to every wedding you attend – my favourite Zimmermann dress is about to go to its sixth wedding. I usually feel my most confident when I’m wearing something that I know I’ll feel good in, rather than anything too impulsive. Another good thing about wearing the same dress again and again is that it has already passed the event test, so you won’t be surprised by creases that emerge 10 minutes after leaving the house.
Renting or borrowing from friends is a great way to try something new or outside of your comfort zone, however if you are buying a new dress, I would recommend investing in something that you can see yourself wearing for many years to come. For Vogue’s Naomi Smart, that means sticking to fashion-forward black dresses that she can wear for last-minute work events or special birthday celebrations. Meanwhile, I stick to the failsafe silhouettes that make me feel my best – namely a cinched-in waist and flared skirt – so that I won’t be tugging at my hemline or feeling awkward while posing for photographs.
