12 winter clothing essentials for men in 2026

Winter, eh? The season of pocket hand-warmers, bundling layers and more than a few gravy-laden Sunday roasts; the November-February period is a long one. That, and once the festive months have passed and wearing cosy clothing no longer feels novel, ol’ Blighty’s bitter weather can leave a little something left to be desired. Specifically, some vitamin D, and not the type that comes from a bottle.

A further challenge, beyond that of sorting your supplements, is dressing for winter’s utter meteorological mess. With minus-degree weather, snow, and more than a bit of rain, dressing in a practical manner that also looks good can feel nigh on impossible. Thankfully for you, that’s where we at GQ come in to help with your seasonal men’s clothing essentials.

Other than religiously checking the Met Office, you’re going to need a reliable foundation of winter essentials to see you through to the spring. Having pulled together the eleven absolute must-haves, from puffer jackets to thick socks, we at GQ present the pieces that you’re going to come to rely on over the next few months. You are most welcome.

Essential Winter Clothing for Men: Stay Stylish in 2026…

1. A voluminous puffer jacket

Come winter, leaving your duvet behind each morning has never felt more challenging. Our timeworn solution? Get yourself a wearable duvet. The best puffer jackets are among the most warming garments on the market, characterised by their thick, insulated design and voluminous silhouette. You can leave your quilt guilt at home: just invest in a good puffer.

2. Some wide-leg trousers

Just like your go-tos, but a little more roomy. Wide-leg trousers can be key for balancing out big, bulging layers and boxy top halves. Plus, a secret bonus to the wide-leg is it leaves room for hidden layering. Just pop some running tights underneath for those excursions on extra-cold days and nights.

3. Face-framing sunglasses

Thought sunglasses were just for summer? Think again. That winter sun can be glaring, and UV protection is never something to turn your nose up at. That, and there’s no denying that the big-shades-big-coat combo is a real one.

4. A warming dressing gown

Need we say more? After a hard day being a grown-up in sub-zero weather, we all deserve to swap one of the best winter coats for men for a thick, fleecy dressing gown. Be it layered over your loungewear or worn as a luxurious alternative to a bath towel, the cosier you can get in winter, the better.

5. A high-quality cashmere jumper

Softer and lighter than their woollen counterparts, a cashmere jumper is just about as opulent as knitwear can get. Lightweight but deeply insulating, this is a pick that slots in naturally among your other wardrobe basics, as well as bringing a simple foundational layer to match with your slightly more statement-making wide-leg trousers and coat of choice.

6. A cosy pair of joggers

Never does loungewear have more intrinsic importance than in winter. Commute over, the second you’re in your own space you ought to be slipping into something a little more comfortable; specifically, a hearty pair of joggers. Because in winter, outdoor clothes stay outdoors.

7. A swoon-worthy wool overcoat

The chic, academic alternative to the streetwise puffer, every wardrobe deserves a wool overcoat. Additionally, for those among us who must wear a suit to work, a swish overcoat makes for a more formal take on everyday outerwear… because a blazer and a down jacket were never meant to meet.

8. Fleeces are cool now, okay?

Much like their preppy cousin the quarter-zip, fleeces are enjoying a major resurgence. Coming hot on the heels of gorp- and explorer-core, the humble fleece has taken on a more stylish form thanks to the good people at brands such as Drake’s and The North Face.

9. Boots, but Chelsea boots

Intro-d to the world by the Victorians before being donned by such dons as The Beatles and Mick Jagger (as well as most of Shoreditch) – no one can resist the charm of a good Chelsea boot. And no one ought to try.

10. A pair of brightly-coloured/patterned trainers

January is grey enough, so it’s time to put your trad white trainers to one side and instead embrace some colour. There are some great options out there, from Kill Bill‘s yellow Onitsuka Tiger sneaks to the much-hyped New Balance, or the more budget-friendly Adidas Spezials.

Puma

11. Are you trying to freeze? Don’t forget your scarf

What are you doing pretending you don’t need a scarf? You do. We’d suggest a pattern-centric statement piece or a totally plain cashmere number. Either way, wrap up and stay warm out there. It’s cosy-guy season.

12. Finally, some thick socks

If you’re wearing boots, a trainer sock just won’t do the trick anymore. Go on, treat yourself.

How do we select our favourite winter clothing essentials for men?

British GQ‘s in-house shopping team, Recommends are installed to test, vet and curate everything from scarves to suitcases to mattresses in a mission to make sure you never buy anything sub-par again. As far as menswear is concerned, we pool together tastes and recommendations from the British GQ and international GQ teams in order to select the very best. Selected by section head for menswear and stylist Heidi Quill, senior commerce writer Jessie Atkinson, sneaker expert Adam Cheung and Paris-based menswear journalist Faye Fearon, all the products featured here and in other guides have been chosen because they exceed in terms of design, quality, price or — best of all — all three.

For our winter essentials checklist we’ve made sure to remind you of the obvious (you need shin- or knee-high rather than ankle socks, don’t leave you scarf at home), as well as offer some extra advice (fleeces are so back…) From outdoor dressing to indoor slouching, these are the products that the GQ team would shop, including many pieces at least one of us already own.

What are the essential clothes for winter 2026?

You can forget about Speedos, for a start (unless you’re into some serious cold water swimming). Naturally, one of the key winter essentials is a warm jacket, like Abercrombie’s goes-with-everything puffer jacket. As for at home, you can’t go wrong with a classic White Company dressing gown – perfect for snuggling up on the sofa.

Aside from jackets and dressing gowns, you’ll also want to consider wide leg trousers like Percival’s auxiliary trousers. Their wider cut helps balance out any thicker layers you have on top, as well as leaving room for thermal layers when it gets extra cold. If and when snow arrives, it can also get blindingly bright, so a stylish pair of sunglasses, like these Ray-Bans, is always a good shout.

Elsewhere, the humble fleece remains one of our favourite choices for peak layering cosiness, and Uniqlo’s comfy (and affordable) half-zip pullover is a superb cold-weather staple. Pair with some comfy Percival x Champion joggers for understated comfort.
